Setting Up A Freshwater Fish Tank
When you are setting up a freshwater fish tank, the best thing that you can do is not jump right in and put fish in as soon as you fill it up with water. You will first need to make the water so that it is livable for the fish to live in. You can do this with water conditioner. All you have to do is follow the instructions that are on the bottle and use some tap water, almost all of the measurements will be in gallons, if you are in the United States, and most of the water conditioners are 1ml for every gallon of water.
What I do is that I will pre-treat the water for at least fifteen minutes before I start to put it into the tank, better yet, in my opinion I wait a couple of days and let the water sit in the jugs before adding to the fish tank. A lot of other information that is out there only says at least 15 minutes though. Once you have let the water conditioner sit in the jug of water for about 15 minutes you can add bacteria supplement to the jug of water for your fish tank, then this is where I will let the water sit for awhile before I put the water into the fish tank.
Now if you are planning on getting some fish that require gravel, or you just want to add gravel to your fish tank, make sure that you wash the gravel thoroughly before you insert into the fish tank. There are lots of things that can harm the fish, that could still be on the brand new gravel, such as fuzz and dust, it is best to just wash the bags of gravel thoroughly in how water. To determine the amount of gravel that you will need for your fish tank read the packaging instructions that should be located on the bag of gravel.
Before you put anything in the fish tank, make sure that it is clean and free of debris. Another good tactic to use when first setting up your fish tank is too fill it up with water as soon as you get it. This will be for testing purposes only, which will be to see if the fish tank has a leak or not. I would fill up the fish tank and let it sit for about a day, if all of the water is still there and it didn't leak on the floor you can be pretty sure that you do not have any leaks. Be wise though, if you have a backyard, garage, or somewhere that if you did have a leak and it leaked, it wouldn't mess up your carpet.
So now you have made sure that your tank does not leak, you have plenty of gravel for your tank, and that you have enough pre-conditioned water with the bacteria added to it. You are now ready to fill up the tank. Fill the tank up and make sure that you have a thermometer of some sort that is inside of the fish tank, these are very cheap and you can also purchase those here too, you will need one if you want your fish to last a long time, or if at all. Set your water heater to the correct setting of what type of fish that you plan on keeping in your fish tank, most freshwater fish will live between a temperature of 72-82 degrees farenheit. It all really depends on what type of fish you will be having in your aquarium, some are easier to tend to then others, some will die easier, and some can live through almost anything.
After you have the water and the fiter and all of that going, I would recomend that you let it cycle for a week or two, although most people will only wait a couple of days and throw the fish in right away, the choice is up to you, you heard what I recommend you do though when setting up fish tank aquariums. Also try not to add more than 2 fish at a time, adding too many fish to an aquarium too fast can mess up the cycle and possibly kill your fish.
